Bébé de Luxe

In 2014 I (Amanda) was bored on maternity leave and my little guy was struggling with eczema. Of course the doctor's recommendation was topical steroids, not something I was comfortable with. So I started looking for remedies and created our signature Coco Oat Milk Bath.

I was the first to market and the first to create a Coconut and Oat Milk Bath. ME. In my kitchen with my Kitchenaid mixer.

That Christmas, I gifted my new mom friends with what would become the iconic Bébé de Luxe glass jars filled with the Coconut and Oat Milk Bath. They all loved it and encouraged me to sell it.

2014 was the year I became a mom and the same year my business baby was born. Bébé de Luxe was chosen for my son's French Canadian heritage on his Dad's side and I loved the English translation to "Luxury Baby".

I learned to source. And let me tell you, sourcing organic coconut milk powder in 2014 was not easy. It was hard to find and it was expensive. I sold out all of our local dollar stores of their glass jars and eventually found their supplier.

I learned to network. Something I wasn't comfortable with but the universe rewarded me for stepping outside my comfort zone. I vividly remember my first networking event in 2015, as the keynote speaker was delivering her speech, my phone was lighting up like crazy with orders - 7 of them! If memory serves me, I had launched my Big Cartel site only a few days before. As soon as I got in the car, I saw it. A blogger I had sent a jar of our Coconut & Oat Milk Bath to had posted her beautiful little girl in a big beautiful soaker tub with the jar of Bébé de Luxe perched on the edge. This was the beginning of a whole new career category - the Influencer.

The day after my birthday in 2015 was the day I delivered our first retail order. I packed up the order and my 10 month old with my Mom and we made a day out of delivering the order to Granville Island. What a beautiful birthday gift! Tamara of Delish General Store will always hold a special place in my heart for being the first retailer to take a chance on me.

Markets were our bread and butter and they were FUN. My burlap table covered with my Grandma's doilies, a picture of my sweet baby and I and our iconic glass jars.

This was a truly magical time to be in small business. There was this beautiful grassroots thing happening where so many people were creating healthier, local brands in all sorts of categories. Clothing, bath, body, beauty, food, drinks, candles, home decor. Everyone supported everyone and we all celebrated our successes and wins. It was incredible and I met so many wonderful friends during this time. Not a lot of the businesses remain and many closed for different reasons but those friendships remain strong and I love to see my friends thriving in the lives they have chosen for themselves, whether it's as the original entrepreneur I met during those early days, a new business idea that took a different path or a completely different calling. We still celebrate our successes, wins and console each other with the losses. One of the greatest gifts is seeing their kids grow up, because many of these entrepreneurs are fellow mothers.

After being back to work for about a year, I was burning the candle at both ends. Commuting into the city to work as a paralegal during the day, manufacturing and packing orders in the evenings. Everyone helped. My Mom, my friends, my friend Shylah's mom - she became my first "paid employee"/"contractor".

Early in 2017, Shylah's mom was doing the lion's share of production. She suggested Shylah and I think about working together. We were both a little apprehensive, as the old saying goes - don't mix business and friendship.
